CPL practice exams. All seven subjects.
Flight Rules & Air Law
Two aircraft are approaching head-on, or nearly so. What must each pilot do?
Head-on, neither aircraft has right of way, so both give way. Each pilot turns right, and the two pass with the other aircraft on their left.
Human Factors
At night, how do you best see a faint light or distant traffic?
The centre of the retina is packed with cones, which need plenty of light. The rods around it do the work in the dark, so a faint light shows best when you look slightly to one side and let its image fall on them.
Aircraft General Knowledge
Explosive, spontaneous combustion in the cylinders is called:
Detonation is an explosive increase in pressure that can cause severe damage to the pistons, valves and spark plugs, as well as causing a decrease in power and quite possibly complete engine failure.
Meteorology
A cold front passes through southern Australia. As it goes through, the wind typically:
Ahead of the front the wind is a warm north-westerly. As the front passes it backs to a cooler south-westerly, the temperature drops and the pressure starts to rise. Backing means the direction changes anticlockwise.
Aerodynamics
An aeroplane stalls at 60 kt in straight and level flight. In a level turn at 60° of bank it will stall at about:
A level turn at 60° of bank doubles the load factor. Stall speed rises with the square root of the load factor, so 60 kt × 1.41 is about 85 kt. The wing still stalls at the same angle of attack. It just gets there at a higher speed.
Performance
The aeroplane is under its maximum weight. You load 50 kg into the rear locker. What can happen?
There are two tests, and both have to pass: under the maximum weight, and the centre of gravity between its forward and aft limits. The locker sits a long way aft, so a little weight there moves the centre of gravity a lot. Here it ends up behind the aft limit with weight to spare.
Navigation
Your true track is 270° and the variation is 10°E. What is the magnetic track?
Variation east, magnetic least. Magnetic north lies 10° east of true north, so every direction measured from it reads 10° less: 270° true is 260° magnetic. With westerly variation you add instead.

Explanations
A score doesn’t teach you anything
Seven subjects is a lot of theory. Knowing you got 68% doesn’t tell you what to study. Knowing why you missed a question does.
A worked answer, start to finish
This is what you get when a question catches you out. Not a red cross, but someone talking you through it.
- Worked reasoning on every answer, right and wrong
- Video walkthroughs for loading charts, TAS and the rest
- Every attempt saved, so you can target the weak subject
Video answers are included on the questions that catch most students out.
What’s included
Everything you need for the CPL
Exams to find the gaps, and the tools to close them. All in the one membership.
Full-length exams
CASA-style CPL exams similar to the real thing: multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank, with detailed feedback on every question.
SmartKDR reports
Score above 50% on any exam or quick quiz and SmartKDR reads your answers, then ranks what to revise next. No more guessing where the marks went.
Quick quizzes
Short, targeted sets by topic. There are over ten on Air Law alone, for when you’ve got ten minutes rather than three hours.
Video answers
CPL topics explained step by step, so you can watch rather than re-read. Works on the phone between flights.
Flashcards
A question on the front, a straight answer on the back. Quick-fire revision for the pockets of time between flights.
KnowTAMs, streaks and a leaderboard
Every exam earns KnowTAMs, and bigger exams earn more. Keep a streak going, climb the weekly leaderboard, and study becomes a habit instead of a cram.
Written by pilots, checked by instructors. Built from student feedback and reviewed by instructors around the country, with fast email support when something isn’t clear.
How it works
Sit. Read. Revise. Resit.
The membership is built around one loop, and it works the same in every subject.
Sit
A full-length exam, timed and formatted like the real CPL exam, so there are no surprises on the day.
Read
Go through the worked explanations, especially the ones you got wrong. Score above 50% and SmartKDR tells you what to revise first.
Revise
Quick quizzes, flashcards and video answers for the topics that caught you out.
Resit
Unlimited attempts. Sit it again, or try the next version. Every SmartKDR is written for that attempt alone.
Then on to the next subjectFinish an exam. Know exactly what to study next with SmartKDR.
Score above 50% and SmartKDR reads your whole attempt, then writes up what you’ve got and what to revise first. Every report is unique to that attempt, not a stock tip sheet.
A KDR is the Knowledge Deficiency Report CASA issues after a real exam. This one arrives while you can still do something about it.
No paying per subject
Unlimited access from $8.33 a month
Pay monthly at $24.95, or prepay 12 months for $99.95 and save 67%. All seven subjects are in, and there’s no paying again when you move on to IREX or your instructor rating.

Reviews
What student pilots say
Rated 5.0 on Google by student pilots across Australia.
The practice tests on PilotTrain were super helpful for my PPL study. They were very similar to the actual exam. More impressively, the customer service and care that Jonty provides really stands out. He was always willing to assist and genuinely cares about the pilots coming through. I’ll be back for CPL practice.
PilotTrain has helped me very much with my RPL theory exam. The explanations provided are incredibly helpful for a deeper understanding of the content. The staff are very responsive to questions as well. Highly recommended! Passed easily with the help of the quizzes. Will be back for CPL.
Excellent website, easy to navigate and the exams closely follow what CASA require you to know. Added to the personal touch of having a phone conversation to discuss any support required, this is an excellent tool to help you navigate tough CASA exams. This website helped me pass my RPL and PPL Theory exams.

Questions, answered
Still stuck? Send us a message and we’ll reply within one business day.
Are these the same questions as the real CASA exam?
No, and we’d be wary of anyone who claims otherwise. There is no way for us to know the contents of a CASA exam, it would be unethical, and it’s prohibited by the regulations.
What we do instead is closely simulate the format, style and difficulty of the real thing. The aim is that you walk in with a knowledge base solid enough to pass, and to fly safely afterwards, which is rather the point.
Do you cover all seven CPL subjects?
Yes. Flight Rules and Air Law, Human Factors, Aircraft General Knowledge, Meteorology, Aerodynamics, Performance and Navigation are all in the one membership. There’s no paying per subject.
Performance is the newest, so it has fewer exams so far. Quick quizzes for Performance and Navigation are coming soon.
Do you have helicopter exams?
Some, and more are on the way. Aircraft General Knowledge and Aerodynamics already cover both aeroplane and helicopter. The remaining rotary exams are being added through our partnership with Helitheory, and they’re included at no extra cost when released.
If the helicopter exam you need isn’t there yet, tell us. It helps us prioritise.
How many attempts do I get?
Unlimited. Resit any exam as often as you like, and use the feedback on every question to see exactly which topics are costing you marks.
Can I use it on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The exams run in your browser on any device. They are online only, so you’ll need an active internet connection. There’s no offline mode.
Can I cancel?
Yes. The monthly plan auto-renews and can be cancelled any time from your account. The 3, 6 and 12 month plans are prepaid one-time charges. They don’t auto-renew, so there’s nothing to cancel.
Also available
Studying something else?
